Legend of Galactic Heroes

Introduction to Legend of Galactic Heroes

Legends of the Galactic Heroes (Legend of the Galactic Heroes) is a science fiction epic based on a series of science fiction novels by Yoshiki Tanaka, published beginning in 1982. Set somewhere in distant space in the 36th-37th centuries, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a story of the epic struggle between the Galactic Empire, a dynastic monarchy based on 19th century Prussia, and the Free Planets Alliance, a nominal democracy.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is different from other anime in that there are no giant transformation robots, transsexual martial artists, or cute transforming magical girls. If you're looking for any of these things, you'll be disappointed. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is far more serious. It is an epic opera set in space, (except without people singing). All types of characters, from high nobility, admirals and politicians, to common soldiers and farmers, are interweaved into the story.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes has aspects that appeal to many different types of fans. Fans who like shows for plot and intrigue will experience quite a bit of both. Other fans who are interested in character designs will find that the show has a great diversity of characters and a strong emphasis on character relationships. Military buffs will enjoy the large-scale space battles (many of which are based on real historical battles) and the military decorum.

The grand scale of the story is well embodied by the space battles in the series- the spectacle of thousands of ships in precise formations locked in mortal combat while the strains of 'Bolero? or the 'New World Symphony' play in the background is simply a sight to be seen.

It is little wonder that Legend of the Galactic Heroes is often known as the Star Wars of Babylon 5 of anime.

Purpose of this share:

The idea for these torrents is to attract attention to modern style fansubbing groups, any group could pick this series and maybe redo/finish the fansubs. This project started before the internet era of distro/fansubbing, and the only US group that did fansubs practically stopped working on it some years ago. The main series is 110 eps, there are two movies, and two side series, one with 24 eps, another with 28 eps, and there is also a "Golden Wings" special, plus both a shonen style manga, a shoujo style manga, and of course, the original novels.

I apologize for the quality of both my source and my encoding, i did not have direct access to the fansubs, all i have are VHS copies. I also tried my best doing the capture, the first movie was done like 5 times, with various tweaks. Each encode took an average of 30 hrs! (I later refined/improved the encoding).

Unfortunately the series are in an even lower grade quality, specially the first episodes are very "jumpy" because they come from SLP VHS copies of the fansubs. I will make these at 175MB max per episode, so 4 eps should fit a CD. The movies are already done under the 702MB limit. Note that so far only the first 42 eps were available fansubbed. There may be a few more but i don't have them. In fact, i only have 40 in the VHS tapes.

It is my sincere hope that people discover this series, and find interest to get it and finish/redo the fansubs and do much better encodes. You can find plenty of information about Legend of Galactic Heroes here: http://www.logh.net/.

Note: i am not affiliated, or even know, any of the LoGH early fansubbers, or the mentioned site, or their distro group (if they had one). I simply was lucky enough to make a copy of somebody who traded with them, many years ago.

Codecs used:

The video codec used was XVID, the unstable binary from Koepi's page, dated 17/02/2003. It should work with a newer release.

Before attempting to install any codec, make sure you do not have any kind of "Codec Pack" installed. It is much safer to install only the separate codecs instead, should you need to know which codec uses your .avi or .ogm file, try the program gspot.

If you have video playback problems, try to make sure your player is using "Video Overlay".

If you use ffdshow, make sure your IDCT is set to "XVID" or is different than "SIMPLE" (causes tint problems), and if you use Post Processing, turn off Luminance (and maybe Chroma) Level Fix (causes saturation), at least with these encodes.

The audio used was MP3, CBR at 160kbps. Should you need a decoder, get and install DivX 3.11 alpha, it includes the required files (let it overwrite your system's "newer" files).

The streams are encapsulated in the outdated (but still popular) .avi metaformat.

How to download:

You need the BitTorrent client, it is open source and cross platform (uses Python2), there are also windows and OS/2 installers.

Then, just feed the client with .torrent files. The client can open remote files stored in web servers, or you can use local .torrent files that you have downloaded earlier. The .torrent files are usually 100K or less.

The BitTorrent client will allocate (use) the entire file size in your hard disk before the actual download starts, so be ready to have the required space already.

Also, you can't do anything with the created file until you see "Download Succeeded" in the BitTorrent client, a partially downloaded torrent is not in usable state, and can only be resumed from within BitTorrent.

Note about file integrity: BitTorrent does cryptographic hashing (SHA1) of all data. When you see "Download Succeded" you can be sure that BitTorrent has already verified the integrity of the data. The integrity and authenticity of a BitTorrent download is as good as the original request to the tracker. Checking the MD5 of a file downloaded via BitTorrent is redundant.
